Conte: EPL Fifth Position Not Acceptable, I'm Committed To Chelsea

The strained relationship between club and manager has clearly affected results on the pitch as the loss to Newcastle is one of a number of embarrassing results for the club this season.

The Premier League season comes to an end this Sunday with the final Champions League place to be decided.

Chelsea have not won a single league game at St James Park since December 2011 and during this period, they have succumbed to three defeats with the other game ending in a draw. Their last manager, Jose Mourinho, was able to help them win the Premier League Title in the 2014-15 season, before leading them in an abysmal performance in the next season.

Brighton beat Manchester United 1-0 last week but that was their only win in nine games in all competitions and they have only two away wins in the league all season. Antonio Rudiger then wasted two glorious chances before the FA Cup finalists finally equalised in fortuitous fashion - a clearance striking Marcos Alonso in the face before flying into the net.

Even the FA Cup would not render this season a success for Chelsea, but Conte will have been concerned by the total lack of appetite shown by his players.

"It won't be easy because a Champions League place is not in our hands, but we have to try and get three points against Newcastle and hope for something positive for us", he told the club's official website.

Asked if it would be damaging for the Blues to miss out on a top-four finish, he said: "I don't know".

But there are more immediate reflections to be made by Chelsea's strategists on what went wrong this season, the abrupt decline from the team brilliantly guided to the 2017 Premier League title.

Possession was Chelsea 58% Newcastle 48%. The midfielder's drive and eye for a direct pass propelled this team back to the Premier League at the first attempt and has been crucial to keeping them there.

With one of the weakest squads in the league, Benitez has led Newcastle to a tenth-placed finish, 11 points clear of relegation.

"I am working with my players this season and it is not right to say something about this".

The Cup represents both clubs' only chance of silverware this season, but Conte once again brushed aside mounting rumours that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will dispense with his services at the end of the season. It's the last time we'll hear the voice of Ron Jones in the commentary box on Today FM as he retires after tomorrow's game.

With that being said, Chelsea aren't a team shy of a few quid so they were always going to replace those players with the same quality - or at least that was the hope.

'Now, I think we must be focused to finish the season.
