When asked about Hart and Wilshere last night, Southgate refused to be drawn on whether they have made a squad which will also reportedly be missing experienced defender Gary Cahill.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart and midfielder Jack Wilshere have not been included.

We know these players and we believe that, in the long term, some of them can be world class players.

Jonjo Shelvey and Jamaal Lascelles miss out despite their good form throughout the season, with Southgate preferring to take Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Trent Alexander-Arnold instead of the Newcastle duo.

Defender Gary Cahill has been recalled and there are also places on the plane to Russian Federation for Chelsea team-mate Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson says Gareth Southgate has done the right thing by calling the players who did not make his World Cup squad. England's first match is against Tunisia on Monday June 18 before group games against Panama and Belgium.

Tottenham's Danny Rose and Ashley Young of Manchester United were the chosen left-backs while there was no place on the plane for Ryan Bertrand. "They're both good guys and have contributed a lot throughout qualification, so it wasn't an enjoyable part of the job and I feel it's important to acknowledge their contribution in getting us to Russian Federation".

Midfielders: Eric Dier (Tottenham), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Fabian Delph (Man City), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea), Jesse Lingard (Man Utd), Dele Alli (Tottenham).

"The first call up for Trent Alexander-Arnold is well deserved", added Southgate.

Standby: Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski (Burnley), Lewis Cook (Bournemouth), Jake Livermore (West Brom) and Adam Lallana (Liverpool).

Fabian Delph can be set to be named within the squad following a formidable season for Manchester City.
