Sivan was one of more than 80 women who have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment, assault, and/or rape.

Former actress Lucia Evans, who said Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex on him in 2004, is thought to be one of the women whose cases triggered the NY charges.

Other women who have publicly accused Weinstein of criminal sexual assaults include actress Rose McGowan, who said Weinstein raped her in 1997 in Utah; Sopranos actress Annabella Sciorra, who said he raped her in her NY apartment in 1992; and Norwegian actress Natassia Malthe, who said he attacked her in a London hotel room in 2008.

The charges came following a joint investigation between the NYPD and the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

Harvey Weinstein turned himself in for arrest in NY on Friday on charges of rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct in cases involving two women.

The New York Police Department issued a statement thanking "these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice".

Mr Weinstein has denied committing any non-consensual sex acts.

"People are so sad, and they are so sick of it", McGowan said of the many other powerful men who have faced sexual misconduct allegations since Weinstein's downfall.

Weinstein was arrested and charged with rape and sexual assault stemming from cases involving two accusers whose crimes were within the statute of limitations.

He agreed to pay $1 million in cash as part of a prenegotiated bail package, with a Manhattan judge also ordering him to wear an electronic monitor and surrender his passport.

Brafman said in a May court filing that federal prosecutors in NY had opened a separate criminal investigation into the allegations.

"I have to admit I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him", she said.

"We intend to move very quickly to dismiss these charges", Brafman said.

"That is the $64,000 question", said Gerald Lefcourt, one of Brafman's peers among NY defence lawyers.

Former "Sopranos" actress Annabella Sciorra, who has said she was sexually assaulted by Weinstein in the 1990s, tweeted "Can't Wait!" followed by "Anyone know where I can get front row seats?"

Authorities have not officially released details of the charges, but three sources told NBC News that they stem from allegations made by two women.

Vance - a Democrat who faced public pressure from women's groups to prosecute Weinstein this time - said Friday's charges "reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation". On Thursday in the United States, Weinstein's spokesman Juda Engelmayer and Weinstein's NY lawyer Benjamin Brafman both declined to comment.

Rose McGowan took a victory lap on Megyn Kelly's hour of Today show, the day Harvey Weinstein turned himself in and was booked on rape charges in Manhattan.

Meanwhile, separate investigations on sex crimes Weinstein was accused of committing in London and Los Angeles are now being conducted.
