Serena Williams rock black 'catsuit' at French Open

Serena Williams has won the first set against Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic in her comeback to Grand Slam tennis following the birth of her daughter in September.

- Despite a nasty fall at the net which left her with an embarrassed smile, Serena saves three break points and claims victory on her second match point. That she is now ranked 451 in the WTA rankings is an irrelevance - more pertinent is that she finished 2017 ranked 22, having played only two events all year.

Williams may be short of match sharpness and the footwork is not quite there yet, but the 36-year-old's serve remains a formidable weapon as she took the first set after a tie-break.

Williams hasn't played in a major since winning her 23rd Grand Slam title at the 2017 Australian Open and a big question mark is hanging over her current form. Both are huge servers, but Pliskova leads the WTA tour with the record for most aces in a match (31).

Caroline Garcia showed her first "Fly with Caro", the nowadays usual celebration, after a dominating 6-1 6-0 win over Ying-Ying Duan.

"I think if there is any way to turn that match around, it's that way", she said.

Sharapova lost six games in a row and then won the next six as she got her return to Paris off to a successful start.

- Williams recovers from 0/3 in tiebreak to take set 7-6 (7/4). Barty, considered in doubt after the injury that forced here to retire in Strasbourg, lived up to her first-time seeding at Roland Garros with a thumping 6-3 6-1 victory over Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva in 64 minutes. She added: "Two years is a long time but I've trained hard on this surface". Then came singles matches that actually counted, with two wins at Indian Wells, Calif., before a loss to Venus, followed by a first-round loss at the Miami Open on March 21. I had a baby but I am so happy to be back.
