Gaza border falls quiet after Egypt brokers ceasefire

A Palestinian official said Egyptian mediation led to a ceasefire, and terms of the "understanding" did not go beyond "a restoration of calm by both sides".

"An agreement was reached to return to the [2014] ceasefire understandings in the Gaza Strip", Hamas' deputy chief in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya said.

The report about Israel's move was widely circulated among travel agents offering trips to the Middle East on Wednesday. Israel says it holds Gaza's Hamas rulers responsible for the bloodshed.

Israeli media said Wednesday that the defense ministry of the regime in Tel Aviv which is responsible for the authorization of the internationally-banned settlements gave the go-ahead for the contractions of 1,957 new units in the West Bank. Egypt mediated the ceasefire reached in 2014, and have been instrumental in communicating between Hamas and Israel.

Early Tuesday, some 28 mortar shells were fired toward Israel from the Gaza Strip, with Israel saying most were intercepted by its air defence systems but leaving residents in the area on high alert and remaining close to bomb shelters.

Many said Iran's fingerprints were all over the attack.

One mortar shell exploded near a kindergarten building, a military spokesman said, damaging the structure.

Rocket launches from were common during Israel's war with Gaza in 2014.

Rockets are fired from inside the Gaza strip towards Israel on the sixth day of Israel's operation "Protective Edge" on July 13, 2014. Shehab said some militants rejected the cease-fire and were continuing to fire rockets.

Not mentioned are Egypt's closing of the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping, its ejection of United Nations forces, the amassing of Arab armies on Israel's borders, the declarations by Arab leaders' about Israel's impending demise, and the ongoing Syrian fire against Israeli communities in the north.

The United States condemned the attacks out of Gaza and called for an urgent meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

The military said it hit drone storage facilities, military compounds, and rocket and munition workshops across the Gaza Strip.

Tuesday's incidents came after weeks of deadly demonstrations and clashes along the Gaza-Israel border, beginning on March 30.

The carnage has brought global condemnation on Israel for an alleged excessive use of force.

"This was a dual-use tunnel, both for smuggling and terrorism", Manelis said, adding it was created to "bypass (Israel's border security) fence".

Islamic Jihad had vowed revenge in response to Israeli tank shelling that killed of three of its men on Sunday after explosives were planted along the Gaza frontier fence.
