Serena Williams beat Kristyna Pliskova in two sets, scoring a victory in her Grand Slam return in the first round of the French Open Tuesday in Paris.

Williams, who was one of the star guests at the royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex earlier this month, returned to the tennis court for her first Grand Slam appearance this week at the French Open, and she will also be at Wimbledon this year.

"I just said I've got to be better, I've got to fight harder", Serena said.

Williams said her daughter inspires her to keep winning as she targets Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 majors.

She will next face either 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams or German 11th seed Julia Goerges, who play later on Saturday, in the fourth round. I've got to just try harder, ' she told the crowd afterward.

Czech Pliskova made the semi-finals here previous year, and may fancy her chances against Sharapova, who had to fight hard to get past Richel Hogenkamp and Vekic in her first two matches.

Williams again played in her striking all-black catsuit which has raised some questions over its legality.

The full-length outfit garnered worldwide attention on Tuesday when Williams stepped out on the clay court for her commanding return to the sport following the birth of her daughter, Alexis Olympia.

"It's not a typical outfit".

As it turned out, the 36-year-old tennis pro's fashion decision had everything to do with her daughter, who's traumatic birth nearly killed her.

"I'm always living in a fantasy world", she added.

Two former No. 1s in Maria Sharapova and Karolina Pliskova will clash in the third round after respective wins over Donna Vekic and Lucie Safarova.

'Catsuit anyone? For all of the moms out there who had a tough recovery from pregnancy-here you go.

The second set only further underlined why the 31-year-old is deemed a strong contender for the title as she continued her dominance of Pliskova's serve and the baseline exchanges to reach the last 16 of the tournament. But I had all the right ideas, like coming to the net and hitting all my shots.

But Sharapova rediscovered her game in the nick of time to reel off half a dozen games for a 6-1 4-6 6-3 victory.
