While Melania Trump has not been seen in public for almost one month, she did make an appearance at a private White House event this week.

Mrs Trump made her worldwide debut as first lady at last year's G7 summit in Italy, and went on to attend the G20 in Germany. Some of the more popular conspiracy theories suggest a longer-term recovery from plastic surgery or a condition that is not so benign; that she's left Trump and moved out of the White House entirely.

Kilmeade mentioned headlines from major media outlets that have persisted in circulating wild theories about Mrs. Trump, including comments about why she won't be going to Singapore - a 21-hour flight - with President Donald Trump next week.

The rumor mill went into overtime: Is she seriously ill?

The press has gone to great lengths to convince readers that Melania Trump's brief absence from the public eye was due to some secret situation rather than the mere fact that she's been recovering from recent surgery.

The first lady and president hosted a similar event this same time previous year in honor of the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve America's freedom.

"It was a privilege to welcome Gold Star Families to the White House today to recognize our Nation's fallen heroes and their families", she said in the statement.

Reporters turned to look at the spot he indicated, but there was no sign of the first lady.

Mrs. Trump is scheduled to join the president Monday in hosting a reception, closed to the press, for Gold Star families.

The Trump Administration being the Trump Administration, however, nothing can ever be easy, transparent or straightforward, and every attempt they make to talk about where Melania just seems to make the "mystery" seem shadier. On Sunday's episode of "Last Week Tonight", the host opened his show by diving into the oversized letter given to Trump by North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol last week.

CNN and several other mainstream media outlets had been painting the first lady as "missing in action", even though several observers pointed out that the first lady was spotted in the West Wing as recently as May 29.

"Mrs. Trump is very strong and independent", Grisham said.

Despite it being a short flight away on Air Force One, she "will not attend" the G7 summit in Canada on Friday and Saturday, according to her communications director Stephanie Grisham. "For all we know, maybe she does understand what the expectations are but just chooses not to play that game". The approach of this enigmatic first lady, who has stuck to a resolutely low profile and opted to ignore some of the conventions of her predecessors, is likely to continue.

The first lady has not participated in a public event since returning from the hospital in mid-May.
