Democrats try to make a blue wave out of a ripple

California saw an unusually large number of Democrats vying for office, many energized by anger over Trump administration policies restricting immigration and abortion access as well as easing environmental regulations.

Republicans did notch up one clear win on Tuesday night.


Ivey, who stepped into the governor post after the resignation of Robert Bentley a year ago, will seek a full term in November.

Julie Husting, a 53-year-old retired accountant from Huntington Beach, said she's a Republican and voted for Cox. Democrats managed to swing a state Senate seat in Missouri, appeared to shut Republicans out of California's Senate race and got their own candidates on the final ballot in each of the key U.S. House races in California.

Democrats need to add 23 seats nationwide to retake the House.

In the central state of Iowa, Democrat businessman Fred Hubbell will represent his party in the governorship race against incumbent Republican Kim Reynolds, who took over the reins after former governor Terry Branstad was appointed the US ambassador to China.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey fended off three Republican challengers, while Representative Kristi Noem became the first female nominee for governor of South Dakota.

Haaland said in her primary victory statement: "Donald Trump and the billionaire class should consider this victory a warning shot: the blue wave is coming". And New Jersey has four competitive House races going on this year. In one, voters favored Hillary Clinton, giving Democrats hope that it could flip in 2018.

Republican businessman Bob Hugin claimed the Republican nomination to face Menendez this fall. Ed Royce and Darrell Issa, and the district where Republican Dana Rohrabacher is facing challenges from the left and the right.

Democrats targeted seven congressional districts won by Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election that are now held by Republicans.

Democrat and venture capital executive Josh Harder held a narrow edge in a central California district over Republican Ted Howze, a long-time local government official.

Republican Representative Mimi Walters easily advanced to the November election in her Orange County district that has been targeted by Democrats.
