Pending an autopsy, the actor's death is being investigated as a natural or accidental death.

TMZ has reported the actor's body was discovered by his girlfriend in the hallway of her apartment Wednesday night. He landed a role as Paddy in 2007's "32A", played Robert in 2009's "Moore Street Masala" and starred in a hit United Kingdom crime series called "Inspector George Gently".

He last appeared in the 2016 thriller Urge as Captain alongside James Bond legend Pierce Brosnan and Canadian actor Justin Chatwin.

Sons of Anarchy debuted in 2008, before eventually concluding in 2014 after 92 episodes.

While his acting career dates back to the 1990s, his role in SoA was his most well known - however he also starred as Keith McGrath in Irish drama Fair City from 2006-2012.

Irish actress Jenny Dixon paid a touching tribute to O'Neill on Twitter. Thank you for your kindness. Alan was only ever a phone call away.

"My thoughts and prayers to you and to your family".

Fair City's Seamus Power, who plays Dermot on the show, said he "always enjoyed working with him".

According to O'Neill's actor page on the website Cast Annette Now, Alan was also an experienced theater actor, having appeared in productions of A Streetcar Named Desire, Hamlet, The Picture of Dorian Grey, and The Importance of Being Earnest.
