No. 1 Sun: Phoenix takes Ayton; Trae Young, Doncic swapped

Doncic was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 National Basketball Association draft but was ultimately traded to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for the rights to former Oklahoma Sooners star Trae Young. On Thursday, the Mavericks seemed to have found what they are looking for in Slovenian Luka Doncic.

With playoffs, the Las Vegas Summer League lasts 11 days, so there remains a possibility Smith and Doncic could play a game or two together.

Doncic arrived in NY on Wednesday after helping Spain's Real Madrid win its league championship after he won Euroleague MVP and Final Four MVP honors when they won that title this year. In fact, the Hawks likely passed on better offers for Doncic so they could still remain high enough to take Young.

The Phoenix Suns made the long-expected move official on Thursday night, taking the Arizona center with the top overall pick.

"We're obviously very excited to have (Doncic) but he's got a very tough road ahead of him".

The Mavericks also gave up a future first-round pick to draft Doncic, who only arrived in NY on Wednesday after helping Spain's Real Madrid win its league championship after he won Euroleague MVP and Final Four MVP honors when they won that title this year.

Last season we saw All-Star Jimmy Butler traded from the Bulls to the Timberwolves on draft night, and this year the Mavericks and Hawks kicked off the in-draft dealing by swapping top-five picks.

With the dust settled, here's where the draft picks will find roles with the team, and plenty more. "Most NBA execs will get over to Europe once or twice, and what if you happen to fall on one or two bad games?"

That gave the Mavs the chance to conclude a deal with the Hawks to get the man they always wanted.

Not a great shooter or defender, Doncic stands out most for his impressive playmaking skills, an attribute magnified by his 6-7 size. "I think his position is on the floor, making plays and making people better".

Johnson was the Nets' coach when they moved to Brooklyn in 2012 but was sacked with a 14-14 record early in that first season shortly after they were blown out at home by Boston in a nationally televised Christmas Day game.

"When you have a young guy like Dennis that just went through that, to have a person of Luka's age as well as a guy like Dirk that has seen and done it all in basketball, you get both perspectives and both are extremely valuable", Nelson said. He also had "They will know your name" stitched on the inside of his jacket. "No matter the (draft) pick you are, you need to show it on the court".
