A United States ballet dancer may not yet realise she has lost both legs in a Bahamas tour boat explosion that killed another American, says a relative. Her full name is Maleka Grimes Jackson.

Stefanie Schaffer, 22, from Rutland, Vt., lost both her legs in the explosion.

After Saturday's incident she remained in critical condition in an induced coma in Nassau, reports US-based ABC News. Video shot by onlookers on a neighboring showed the aftermath of the explosion.

According to a CNN report, the 40-foot tour boat was carrying tourists and two Bahamians before an engine exploded shortly after 9 a.m. They were initally treated for their injuries at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas. Stacey suffered multiples broken bones and internal injuries. Sisters Stefanie and Brooke Schaffer were on board with their parents, Stacey and Paul Bender, at the time of the blast.

ABC News reported that one of the 10 Americans, who has not been identified, who was on the boat was killed.

Shanta Knowles, superintendent of police for the Royal Bahamas Police Force, told NBC investigators were still "trying to determine what went wrong".

Bahamian authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident, according to AP.

A good Samaritan then offered to rush Stefanie and her mother Stacey, who was also injured, to a hospital 30 minutes away. Still, passengers in red life jackets waded through a translucent turquoise sea to rescue survivors from the burning boat.

Four injured people were evacuated to Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg, Florida, for treatment, the U.S. Coast Guard said. "We are saddened and our hearts are hurting, but we will get through this together", Bahamas parliament member Chester Cooper posted on Facebook, according to CNN.
