Barack Obama went down 2.1 million.

Rahul Gandhi's total number of followers have dropped by around 17,000 on Twitter, as per reports.

Some of the network's biggest users were hit, including Twitter's own account, which lost nearly eight million followers after the mass banishment.

Most of these accounts, however, saw their follower counts start to slowly tick upward by Friday morning, on track with a rate of follower growth that is not unusual for the respective accounts.

A Twitter Inc policy change on Thursday to increase the service's credibility cost its 100 most popular users about 2 percent of their followers, on average, according to social media data firm Keyhole.

"Over the years, we've locked accounts when we detected sudden changes in account behaviour", Twitter spokeswoman Vijaya Gadde said.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer was the only federal leader to actually gain followers over the last few days, up 200 from the time the purge was announced.

Singers Katy Perry and Justin Bieber each lost almost 3 million followers.

Celebs and influencers were left with bruised egos on Thursday after Twitter officially began eliminating suspect accounts from its platform, a move that's led to decreased follower counts for users. "We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency will make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation".

"Followercounts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate", Gadde said.

BCW's own review of 951 Twitter accounts showed that 125 of them, or 13 percent, were now dormant, 33 inactive and nine protected. While this percentage seems low, it equates to a loss of 3.6 million followers.

Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Thursday that Twitter "removed 4,000 of my followers" as the social networking site purged fake accounts - including 300,000 reportedly from President Donald Trump's feed - that were disabled because of suspicious activity.

Apparently, a lot of those accounts followed the CEO of Twitter. Kathy Ireland, the onetime swimsuit model who today presides over a half-billion-dollar licensing empire, has hundreds of thousands of fake Devumi followers, as does Akbar Gbajabiamila, the host of the show "American Ninja Warrior".
