Lawmaker To Resign After Shouting Slurs On Sacha Baron Cohen’s Show

U.S. politician Jason Spencer has resigned after being pranked on Sacha Baron Cohen's satirical show Who Is America?

Spencer, a Republican who has served in the Georgia House of Representatives since 2011, said in a one-sentence email to House Speaker David Ralston that he had made a decision to step down.

Spencer was pranked into believing the comedian was an Israeli anti-terrorism expert who was able to convince the legislator that a series of racist acts would protect him against terrorists.

Mr Spencer repeatedly shouts "n***er" after Cohen tells him the tactic is useful for drawing bystanders' attention to an unfolding attack.

He also drops his trousers, then his underwear, before backing his exposed rear end toward Baron Cohen while shouting "USA!" and "America!"

Spencer, a Republican, is just one of a number of lawmakers to have been duped into appearing on the series, in which Cohen has gotten public figures to make statements that some have later regretted.

But Spencer's conduct drew a tidal wave of backlash and fresh calls for the longtime lawmaker, who is no stranger to controversy, to step down.

David Ralston, the Republican speaker for the state house of representatives had led calls for Mr Spencer's immediate resignation.

Who Is America? airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime. Cohen tells Spencer that nothing scares a terrorist more than being a "homo". "Representative Spencer has disgraced himself and should resign immediately", Ralston said in his statement.

In the new show Baron Cohen dons various prosthetics and accents in an attempt to embarrass those on the right and left.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal condemned Spencer's actions, tweeting on Monday: "The actions and language used by Jason Spencer are appalling and offensive".

Spencer told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the show "exploited" his state of mind "for profit and notoriety".

"There is no excuse for this type of behavior, ever, and I am saddened and disgusted by it", he said.
