"I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight as I didn't sleep last night!"

India were 110 for five - still 84 runs shy of victory - with England needing five wickets.

And he followed that up with a dashing 63, his maiden Test fifty, to give England a target worth defending after they had collapsed to 87 for seven in their second innings. The 20-year-old picked up a total of five wickets. It can throw so many different things at you in the course of three or four days and you have to really think your way around it, stay strong as a group, keeping believing in one another and special things can happen - just like today. "It is great that he is still the same enthusiastic cricketer he was as a youngster", he says before adding, "[Growing up], Sam was extremely talented but would also train really hard and competitively, particularly with his elder brothers. But even for a player used to taking the big stage in his stride, this was a step up in intensity.

"We've just got to be positive, fearless, enjoy our cricket and try and take the negatives out of the equation, look at the positives and try and build on those. To be honest, I tried to learn from how Virat batted with the tail in the first innings", Curran said. "And I spoke to Kumar [Sangakkarra] a bit after the second day about batting with the tail so that helped".

England coach Trevor Bayliss admitted the team are "under no illusions" about the improvements they will have to make if they are to retain a lead in the Test series against India.

"(But) I've got no concerns about it. "What a game", Root said at the post-match press conference.

Stokes, of Castle Eden, Durham; Ali, of Bristol; and Hale, of Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, are on bail.

After banking that success in England's 1,000th Test, Bayliss called on those who will be at Lord's to try to fill the shoes of premier all-rounder Stokes. "But two Tests in, it's very easy to get carried away". He scored 45.87% of India's runs in the Test which is also a record. He was defensive and crouched in his approach when facing Anderson, while he tricked the likes of Stuart Broad, Adil Rashid and Sam Curran to give himself more room to play.

England have brought in Chris Woakes as Stokes's replacement for the second Test, scheduled to get underway from Thursday. Second, isn't Cheteshwar Pujara - out of form - still a better Test match player than Dhawan?

"I have dreamt of this growing up", he said. Kohli had entered the Edgbaston Test on 903 points, 13 points behind Gavaskar, and is now ahead of the ICC Cricket Hall of Famer by 18 points. "Playing Test cricket in front of this crowd, with these guys I have grown up watching, I am just looking to learn everyday", Curran said. Kohli's gesture of "mic drop" after he ran out Joe Root on day one was considered both immature and audacious in both parts. Kohli came a little too across on an insinging delivery from Ben Stokes (14.2-40-4) and was plumb in front of the wickets.
