And then he almost lost it.

"They don't get to come out that often anymore, so this is my first PGA Tour win with him here and it's really special".

Kenny Perry won the 3M Championship one last time, closing with a 3-under 69 for a three-stroke victory in the PGA Tour Champions event that is being replaced by the PGA Tour's 3M Open.

At 24 years old, Thomas won his first major last year when he won the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. "I like to hit driver as much as possible, and this course allows me to do that, and to be aggressive".

Here are the seven hottest storylines entering the Championship, where some of the PGA Tour's young stars will try to accomplish historic feats and a few popular veteran players will try to make up ground in the Ryder Cup USA points standings. "So it was pretty cool to get it done".

Paul Thomas was a career club professional and played at Firestone in the 1960 PGA Championship, missing the 54-hole cut.

PGA golfer Justin Thomas tees off on the 3rd hole during the third round of the WGC - Bridgestone Invitational golf tournament at Firestone Country Club - South Course. A birdie at No. 10 put him three shots behind, but that was all he had.

McIlroy finished the back nine with consecutive bogeys and never recovered.

Also the 2014 and 2015 victor at TPC Twin Cities, the 57-year-old Perry matched Hale Irwin's tournament record of three victories in the final edition of the event that started in 1993.

After a bad drive led to a bogey at the first hole, he fired up a large gallery with three birdies in the next four holes, but picked up only one birdie the rest of the way. Tiger Woods has won more than $10 million at the Bridgestone Invitational in his career, including 9 wins, according to USA Today.

Tiger Woods, an eight-time victor at the Firestone club hosting the Bridgestone for the last time, carded his second straight 73 to finish with a share of 31st. His three-over 73 left him tied for sixth on 272.

"It was very similar to the first day", Woods said. "But it is what it is, and on to next week".

Thomas had not had a score better than 67, and he had not finished higher than a tie for 28th in his two previous appearances at Firestone. Winless the last five months without feeling as though his game were in disarray, he got the result he needed ahead of the final major of the year. Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed have already clinched three of the eight automatic bids.

Two other WGC events, the Dell Technologies Match Play, won by Bubba Watson, and the Mexico Championship, won by Phil Mickelson also payout $10 million. He lost in the semifinals of the Match Play.

"I was just trying to be as aggressive as possible and fire at everything", Woods said.

"For sure, especially contending on a golf course like (Firestone)", Leishman said. Thomas turned his head and placed it comfortably on his grandfather's shoulder.

The tournament's final edition at Firestone offered little drama as no one got within two of Thomas.
