USA sanctions Russian firms, vessels over NK activity

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov responded to Hunt's speech by saying Britain was trying to impose its Russia policy on the European Union and United States, the RIA News Agency reported.

Russian Federation added more gold reserves in July than any other month this year as it continues to buy up the metal in the face of USA sanctions.

"Ship-to-ship transfers with North Korea-flagged vessels from Russian Federation or elsewhere of any goods being supplied, sold, or transferred to or from (North Korea) are prohibited under the U.N. Security Council resolutions on North Korea and are sanctionable under U.S. law", U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

The Deputy Minister also said that from the beginning of 2017, the USA government imposed sanctions against 217 Russian legal entities and individuals.

He noted that the US attempts to push for tougher United Nations sanctions against North Korea won't work.

Reading from a script at the White House, he said that he had actually meant to say that he didn't know why the Russians "wouldn't" interfere in United States elections and said he had made unequivocal statements on Moscow's culpability on multiple occasions.

It also sanctioned two Russian shipping companies and six ships over claims of transferring refined petroleum products to North Korean vessels.


Of the six Russian vessels now facing USA sanctions, four entered South Korean ports this year, according to the Voice of America on Wednesday.

It described Office 39 as engaging in "illicit economic activities for (the) North Korean leadership".

The Treasury Department is going after two companies and two Russians suspected of trying to circumvent US sanctions imposed in June in response to cyberattacks and other malicious activities run by Moscow's military and spy services.

"So we're not saying we're going to do exactly the same thing, but we have to make sure that our reaction is to stand shoulder to shoulder with America". But while negotiations with North Korea were going well, the administration largely turned a blind eye to the problem.

Hunt is speaking Tuesday morning at the U.S. Institute of Peace.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has rejected the possibility of representatives of the Taliban movement being used by Russia to fight Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).
