In the trailer, Ali's character, Arkansas state police detective Wayne Hays, is heard in a voiceover talking about his life as clips show the character at different ages.

The first look of the third season of True Detective is giving off some major season one vibes with its haunting and enigamatic imagery.

Carmen Ejogo, Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer and Stephen Dorff co-star in the series, which will premiere nearly three and a half years after the second season closed out. "The things I've seen. the things I know. won't do anything but cause harm. My whole brain's a bunch of missing pieces", he says in the voice-over in the trailer. "I want to know the whole story". The minute-long teaser aired before the finale of the miniseries "Sharp Objects".

The first trailer for the long-awaited return of True Detective is here.

HBO's anthology crime series True Detective launched in January of 2014 to widespread acclaim. Rounding out the cast is Ray Fisher (Justice League) as Wayne's son and Carmen Ejogo (Selma) as Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher.

I can't help but get excited for the third season of True Detective, even after being horribly disappointed by the lethargic second season.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto returns to pen the entire season, as he has for the past two seasons.

Season three will be helmed in part by up-and-coming director Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room), whose new film Hold the Dark is coming to Netflix soon.
