Vermont delegation reacts to John McCain’s death

The U.S. Embassy announced it will launch a fellowship in the names of McCain and Kerry, the former secretary of state who also served in the U.S. navy in Vietnam.

McCain for years has promoted closer ties between Vietnam, which imprisoned him, and the United States.

McCain is scheduled to lie in state at the Arizona Capitol on Wednesday, followed by the service on Thursday.

Two Republicans also told the Times that former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have been asked to give eulogies at McCain's funeral. As he wished, McCain will be buried next to a Naval Academy classmate and lifelong friend, Chuck Larson.

He also cultivated a reputation as an independent willing to work with Democrats on immigration and campaign finance, and was a fierce critic of Russian Federation and a strong proponent of an aggressive US role against the Islamic State extremist group.

Since his death on Saturday from cancer, a monument on the shores of the Hanoi lake where McCain was captured has turned into a de facto shrine. He had battled brain cancer.

President Donald Trump rejected a White House statement mourning the loss of John McCain and praising the late senator and war hero, according to a report from The Washington Post.

With McCain set to be honored in Arizona's Capitol, GOP Gov. Doug Ducey said in a tweet, "This is a rare and distinct occurrence for a truly special man".

Gov. Ducey will name a replacement to serve until the 2020 election. The Vietnamese people have that will and Mr. John McCain has that will.

Tributes poured in from around the globe.

"To be connected to America's causes - liberty equal justice, respect for the dignity of all people - brings happiness more sublime than life's fleeting pleasures", wrote McCain. "He devoted his entire life to his country".
