But bowing to pressure, flags were lowered again and and hours after that US President Donald Trump finally made a statement about the late senator.

No explanations were offered.

The Vietnam News Agency said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan sent messages of condolence to McCain's family and U.S. Senate leaders, while Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh paid respects to McCain at the embassy. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities overseas, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

Mr McCain died on Saturday, aged 81, after choosing to end medical treatment for brain cancer.

"We can try, as he did, to put country before party".

In 2015, as a presidential candidate, Trump questioned McCain's public image as a war hero who was imprisoned by the North Vietnamese.

John McCain would have wanted a Hispanic woman to take his place in the US Senate, his former campaign manager said.

"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain", Trump tweeted August 25. "Our hearts and prayers are with you!"

He later withdrew his support after the release of the infamous "Access Hollywood" tape in which Trump bragged about groping women. McCain's daughter Meghan tweeted last September 27.

Encapsulate the life of a war hero and political giant in only about five or six minutes is something with which Fitzgerald is grappling.

McCain's colleagues in the Senate from both sides of the aisle called on Trump to lower the flag.

Schumer also called on Republicans to join him in his efforts to rename a Senate office building, now named for the controversial former Sen.

Earlier Monday, a statement written by McCain before his death read like a not-so-veiled criticism of the president. Trump says 80 percent of the media is fake news and frequently attacks journalists and their outlets, though he does provide more access than is commonly realized because he doesn't hold formal press conferences.

In addition to signing the proclamation, Trump announced that he'd asked Vice President Mike Pence to give an address at the ceremony honoring McCain at the Capitol on Friday.

"The disparity between the Congress and White House policy is obviously noticeable and somewhat shocking".

"I owe that satisfaction to the love of my family". We argue and compete and sometimes even vilify each other in our raucous public debates.

"But we have always had so much more in common with each other than in disagreement", he wrote.

Part of this outlook was manifested by his backing of a strong US-Israel relationship. We believe always in the promise and greatness of America because nothing is inevitable here.

"Americans never quit. We never surrender".
