From there, a C-32 military aircraft will take McCain to the East Coast for another public viewing at the U.S. Capitol on Friday.

Military personal carry the casket of John McCain.

The daylong public viewing of his casket was the start of five days of memorial tributes in Phoenix and Washington for McCain, who died of brain cancer on Saturday at his ranch in Cornville, Arizona.

McCain was a stalwart ally of Israel.

His body will then lie in state on Friday at the US capitol for another memorial ceremony and public viewing, to be followed on Saturday by a funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral.

Schumer also cited McCain's bravery and dedication to the armed forces, before calling on lawmakers to rename the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington after the late lawmaker. McCain is to be buried at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on Sunday.

He took office in Arizona in the early 1980s, first as a congressman and then as a senator in the seat once held by senator Barry Goldwater.

John McCain's casket is driving in a motorcade along a Phoenix highway on its way to the memorial service for the longtime Republican senator and two-time presidential candidate. According to John McCain's website, his wife will lay a ceremonial wreath when the motorcade stops mid-run, at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Former Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl served alongside McCain in the U.S. Senate for almost two decades.

"He was about the only politician that I have ever known who cared for the people in his country, and he tried his level best to make it a better place in which to live", Fellars said.

The memorial comes after McCain's benediction at the Arizona State Capitol, where the public was allowed to appear before his casket and pay their last respects.

Ducey echoed McCain's love for the state, saying, "Imagining an Arizona without John McCain is like imagining an Arizona without the Grand Canyon".

Ducey, a Republican, has said he will wait until after McCain's burial to name a successor.

"When John McCain called on us to serve a objective greater than one's own self-interest, it wasn't a talking point created to win the next election", Ducey said.

"He believed in something", said Hubbard, who had voted for McCain.

Family and friends gathered there Wednesday for a private service, where Cindy McCain pressed her face against her husband's coffin.

For some Arizona residents, McCain has been a political fixture for their entire lives. "We'll miss that pace", Davis, McCain's former national campaign manager for both of his presidential bids, said.

The main speech in tribute to McCain was to be delivered by Biden, a friend and former six-term Democratic senator from DE who was elected vice president as the running mate of McCain's rival for the White House, Barack Obama, who defeated McCain in the 2008 presidential race.

Senator McCain's body will lie in Arizona before his final journey to the US Naval Academy in Washington DC.
