Ronaldo, who was not in Monaco despite being nominated for an individual award, spent six years at United, winning the Champions League in 2008, before moving to Real Madrid in 2009.

Given the dominance of both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in recent years, seeing a player like Modric win it was refreshing in the eyes of most.

He was also the main star in the Croatian squad as they surprised many by reaching the World Cup final in Russian Federation this summer, eventually losing out to winners France 4-2 in Moscow.

Real Madrid is guaranteed to earn at least 50 million euros ($59 million), plus a share of Spanish TV rights money and results bonuses.

Group E: Bayern Munich, Benfica, Ajax, AEK Athen. "We want to be stronger in Europe and we want to have the opportunity to fight for this Champions League".

Changes brought in for this season mean half of the clubs in the group stage were allocated to the top four sides in the four best-ranked leagues: Spain, England, Germany and Italy.

"Manchester City are a massive challenge for us", said Hoffenheim coach Julien Nagelsmann.
