McCain passed away Saturday at the age of 81 after a yearlong battle with an aggressive brain cancer. The school choir from Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix - where McCain's sons Jack and Jimmy attended - performed a rendition of "Amazing Grace" early in the memorial.

Mr McCain's longtime chief of staff, Grant Woods spoke about the senator's "terribly bad driving" and his sense of humour - which drew a chuckle.

Two White House officials said McCain's family had asked, before the senator's death, that Trump not attend the funeral services.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Illinois Democrat, told reporters of McCain "We need people with his values here".

The ceremony was the first of two days of services in Washington honoring the Arizona senator, who served in Congress for 35 years.

After it ends, McCain's body will be taken to Sky Harbor International Airport and flown to Washington D.C., where it will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol building before a funeral service featuring former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

As the hearse made its way along the 8-mile route, people held signs that read simply "McCain" and cars on the other side of the highway stopped or slowed to a crawl in apparent tribute. The motorcade carrying his American flag-draped casket arrived just before 10 a.m.

"We were the ones who were privileged, privileged to have John McCain fighting for us", Ducey said, "privileged to learn from him".

"We both loved the Senate".

Fitzgerald celebrated McCain as a friend as well as an inspiration, remarking love not only for family and friends but for fellow man in general, irrespective of their race or party.

Seated beside her granddaughter Meghan McCain, she held the young woman's hand and appeared to comfort her as she wept.

More than 2,500 invited guests will file into the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday to pay their respects to Senator John McCain.

Biden noted that McCain died of the same kind of cancer that killed his son Joseph "Beau" Biden III and the two politicians' mutual friend Sen.

Arizonans began lining the streets and mourners gathered at a Baptist church Thursday for a second day of memorial services for Sen.

None of the speakers at the North Phoenix Baptist Church on Thursday uttered Trump's name.

He said McCain (R-Ariz) inspired him to visit Vietnam and retrace the steps of the retired Navy pilot's gruesome imprisonment.

"He cared about the substance of my heart moreso than where I came from", he said.

During his last term in the Senate, in which he has served since 1987, McCain directly challenged the Trump administration and his fellow Republicans on many issues, becoming the deciding vote against the repeal of Obamacare past year.
