J.K. Rowling, Jemele Hill & Others Call Out Racist Serena Williams Cartoon

The American superstar claimed that chair umpire Carlos Ramos meted out penalties for infractions that male players could have gotten away with.

Naomi Osaka's family members and mentors expressed a flurry of emotions following her September 9 (Japan time) victory over Serena Williams in the U.S. Open tennis tournament final.

Williams will be fined $4,000 for a coaching violation, $3,000 for smashing her racquet, and $10,000 for verbal abuse towards the umpire.

Tennis great Billie Jean King wrote on Twitter: "When a woman is emotional, she's "hysterical" and she's penalized for it". You can't point your finger and call the umpire a thief and not expect to get another violation, which is what cost her a game.

But Date said Osaka's triumph in her first Grand Slam final was "amazing".

"Top umpires have to be able to withstand the pressures put on them by top players who do not own the court, who have to play by the same rules and code of conduct as the qualifier, the new finalist and the softly spoken player", Morrissey said.

"It's sad for the sport when a player tries to become bigger than the rules".

I was like, Yup, this guy right here, he's going to be great', Osaka said laughing.

But I believe there is a compelling reason against coaching during matches: the introduction of on-court coaching runs counter to one of the fundamental purposes of the sport. After Carlos Ramos penalised her with a warning for receiving coaching from the player's box, a visibly upset Williams challenged Ramos. Osaka said she was grateful for Williams's efforts.

Serena Williams of the United States of America argues tournament official Brian Earley while playing Naomi Osaka of Japan in the women's final on day thirteen of the 2018 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Most bizarrely, Adams claimed that Williams had not expected her exchanges with Ramos to be filmed despite taking place in the middle of a grand slam final. "And they are going to be able to do that because of today", she said. That triggered a third violation, which resulted in a game penalty that gave Osaka a 5-3 lead. Mari, who suffered an injury early in her career, is now ranked 367 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).

Serena Williams has to pay for the fines out of her $1.85 Million tournament winnings. Venus Williams disputed that, telling Ramos (via Sky News), "I'm 36 years old". After the match, Williams refused to shake hands with Ramos and suggested he needed to apologize again. But a couple of high-profile names have had trouble in this area: Williams on three different occasions at the US Open, and John McEnroe on a far more regular basis.

Others tried to pick holes in the authenticity of the cartoon, such as Williams never having actually jumped into the air and onto her racket during her tirade.

In a tweet that's been liked more than 6,000 times, author Charlene Carruthers said: "What happened to Serena happens to black women in the workplace every day".
