It was the first of Thiem and Nadal's 11 meetings that had not taken place on a clay court and the 25-year-old came out firing.

"It's been a great battle", an exhausted Nadal said of the four hour 49 minute epic.

Rafael Nadal of Spain hits to Dominic Thiem of Austria in a quarter-final match on day nine of the 2018 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

"To be honest, I am very, very sorry for Dominic", he added. He's a great guy, a close friend who will have many more opportunities to win the big titles. The quarterfinal exit marks the deepest run Thiem has made at a major other than Roland Garros. He always plays and practices with a great attitude.

Nadal never looked as physically spent as Federer did in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night, but in a rematch of this year's French Open final, Thiem had him on the ropes. For the match, he hit 74 winners and 18 aces and stole six break points to Nadal's five. Natural reaction from Nadal is to hope that your opponent gives you the third set.

This story was first published on, "Rafael Nadal outlasts Thiem in 5-set US Open thriller". "Not insane, but tough", Nadal said.

Nadal trailed by a break in the third set before taking it. But once again Nadal stepped up the level, saved two break points in the game and then went on to claw back to 4-4. But, as in the second set, when the time came to keep his foot on Nadal's throat, he instead loosened the pressure and lived to regret it.

"It was a very tough start and then I tried to stay in the match in some way in that second set and I did".

The Austrian was heartbroken but proud, saying: "It's going to be stuck in my mind forever".

She then dropped her racket and held her hands to her face as a Stephens shot went into the net on the match's final point. But there has to be one.

But he took the tiebreaker before Nadal just proved the steadier of the two in the final set decider.

Those choruses resonated in the arena after key points, such as each time del Potro erased one of Isner's break chances, three in all.

"Sad for him because when arrive this moment, he did all the things well to win the match", Nadal said of Thiem. That was wrapped up in just 24 minutes with Nadal winning only seven points.

"To reach the semifinal again here in NY in my favourite tournament is very special to me", said Del Potro after his eighth win over Isner in 12 meetings. He's a great guy. I don't want to lose against anybody. But now I wish him the title the most, that's for sure.

"We fought the whole match and I survived with my serve which was key". "Me, too. I fought until the end".

For the finals of the U.S. Open to Nadal, being the primary racket of the world, will compete with Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, sown by the third quantity.
