Darnold off the mark as Jets maul Lions

Darnold was still holding the ball while talking briefly with Stafford on the field.

"I know that just because I got named the starter doesn't mean that we won the game Monday night", Darnold said during the past week.

"I know it sounds insane, but we're a lot better football team than we showed", tackle Taylor Decker said.

The defense barely let the Lions breathe in Matt Patricia's head coaching debut.

During their 48-17 blowout against the Detroit Lions on Monday, it appeared as though the New York Jets players knew what was coming.

The booing began early.

And for the first time, Patricia will be an National Football League head coach in a game that counts Monday night in Detroit against the New York Jets.

Benoit says the Lions should be a different animal in the regular season, employing all the defensive tactics in Patricia's arsenal.

The Lions fired coach Jim Caldwell after going 9-7 last season. This was a night for optimism for a franchise that far too often has had far too little of it.

Unruffled, Darnold led the Jets on their first scoring drive later in the quarter, with Crowell producing a 6-yard TD run. Giants fans even got in the fun, sharing their delight at their team taking running back Saquon Barkley instead one pick earlier. "We've got to go out and execute a lot better on the field".

There were boos from the crowd later in the quarter, though. They simply noted the predictability of Detroit's offense, which mustered just one touchdown in new head coach Matt Patricia's debut.

No one in the National Football League is really sure what a Patricia-led team will look like because what he showed in the preseason is not expected to be anything like what he'll do in Week 1 against the Jets.

Then the Jets reeled off 31 straight points before the end of the third.

Watch Roberts evade the first group of tacklers, then tiptoe his way down the sideline to give NY a 21-point lead.

The last two quarterbacks, before Darnold, to have their first career passes intercepted and returned for a touchdown?

NY scored on the ground and through the air, on defense and on a punt return by former Lion Andre Roberts.

As for running back, Isaiah Crowell's bruising running style is a compliment to Bilal Powell's elusive rushing and pass-catching abilities.

Lee said the Jets had a read on Detroit's signals.

The referee for the game is Bill Vinovich, who is refereeing his ninth Jets game since 2004, including the 2006 playoff game at New England and the 2015 home win over Miami.

"I've been watching that formation since like July", Lee said. "We had too many of them, I had too many of them".

"On that interception, I was pretty nervous", Darnold said.
