The 59-year-old Italian said: "I am very open with him, because he's the history of the club".

Luiz, who was a peripheral figure under Antonio Conte last season, has rejuvenated his career at Stamford Bridge under Sarri this term.

Chelsea host promoted side Cardiff next on Saturday (3pm) at Stamford Bridge.

"I said before I want to give space to the young players", Sarri said.

Chelsea's ideal start to the season has led to suggestions they can challenge for the title after placing fifth last term, well adrift of champions Manchester City.

Maurizio Sarri understands John Terry would like to continue playing, but Chelsea are leaving the door open for a possible coaching role at the club. "[But] in this first period, for me, it was very important not to change, especially the defensive line".

But Sarri does not see his side battling for the title at the end of the season, instead thinking Liverpool and City will be the two teams vying for silverware.

"If he wants to help us I am really very happy".

"We need another step to be at the same level".

Sarri has decided on his permanent captain, but will tell his players his decision first, with Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and David Luiz all potential skippers.

"I think it is very hard for me and every coach", Sarri told a media conference on Friday. The gap was 30 points at the beginning of the season.

Fabregas is likely to only be fit for a place on the bench, though, and could replace Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who picked up an injury on global duty with England.

"But the Premier League is very competitive, other teams have a lot of good players and it will not be easy".

"It's a hard game for everybody, against Cardiff", Sarri added.
