Unexpected First Look at Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker

The Instagram share comes from Todd Phillips, the director of Warner Bros. upcoming Joker movie.

So when Joaquin Phoenix's name was confirmed to be playing the role of the Joker in the Todd Philips directed movie - I was at least intrigued.

Joaquin Phoenix is Arthur Fleck in the first official image of the actor from the set of Joker. The Joker has, of course, used many aliases over the years, but most have always involved a "J" somewhere (Jack Napier, Jack White etc.), so it's something of a departure for this incarnation to omit the letter entirely. Phillips teamed up with Scott Silver (8 Mile) to write a script described as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale".

In the comics, there's no definitive backstory for Batman's greatest villain.

Joaquin Phoenix looks ready for a life of crime.

The world doesn't need a Joker origin movie, but it's getting one anyway. Baldwin's replacement will join a cast that includes Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2) as downtrodden single mother Sophie Dumond, and Marc Maron (GLOW), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story) and Robert De Niro (The Godfather: Part II) in unannounced roles.

On that note, according to a Hollywood Reporter story last month, both Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill are on their way out as Batman and Superman respectively in the DC Extended Universe. It looks like a screen test of Phoenix with a stern look through his long brown hair.

Joker is scheduled to be released in October 2019.
