Open the fridges, Cleveland: Browns beat the Jets, 21-17

"It's not the only win we're going to celebrate", Mayfield said.

There was no expectation that Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, would play in this game because the veteran Tyrod Taylor was entrenched at quarterback.

Cleveland passed on taking Darnold in the draft and instead chose Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy victor from the University of Oklahoma.

It had been a while since the Cleveland Browns won a football game. Jackson could also be faced with a hard choice - either stick with Mayfield or go back to Taylor when he's healthy. The victory was made all the bit sweeter by an inspirational debut by quarterback Baker Mayfield.

With Cleveland's crowd roaring, Mayfield completed a 14-yard pass to Jarvis Landry on his first pass as a pro and then found tight end David Njoku for 17 yards.

This time, with Mayfield leading the charge, the Browns (1-1-1) made enough plays to triumph.

"He got hurt, so let's not talk about if I would have or wouldn't of", he said.

Some fans had taken to wearing paper bags over their heads in embarrassment of their team's unwanted record - that included becoming the second team in National Football League history to go 0-16 in a season - but all that changed on a night which saw an upturn in form for the Browns.

Cleveland's plan was to have Mayfield watch and learn this season. "I have had some great memories, but I am just getting started". Taylor, an eight-year veteran, was traded to the Browns this off-season and was expected to be a solid caretaker until Mayfield was ready. With Mayfield under center, the Browns erased what was once a 14-point deficit and won the game, 21-17. He has thrown five interceptions through three games. It also drew a 15-yard penalty.

It also couldn't have come against a better team as Mayfield was much better than Sam Darnold - who some still thought should have been picked over Mayfield.

Taylor is now considered as day-to-day with a concussion and his availability for next week's road game against the Oakland Raiders is currently cloudy.

Running back Carlos Hyde scored two second-half touchdowns, including the clincher with 2:04 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Browns defense produced three more turnovers.
