McConnell to Trump: Kavanaugh tweets weren't helpful

"Dr. Ford accepts the Committee's request to provide her firsthand knowledge of Brett Kavanaugh's sexual misconduct next week", they said, stopping short of accepting Grassley's initial offer of a Wednesday hearing and complaining that the terms of his offer were "inconsistent with the Committee's promise of a fair, impartial investigation into her allegations".

The Republican majority on the judiciary committee had been arguing with Ford's lawyers about the details of Ford's appearance before the committee, such as the day of the hearing and how many cameras would be allowed into the chamber.

Ford will testify on Wednesday or Thursday, according to USA media reports.

US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh denies the allegations by Christine Blasey Ford.

Grassley's stance reflected a desire by Trump and GOP leaders to usher the 53-year-old Kavanaugh onto the high court by the October 1 start of its new session and before the November elections, when Democrats are mounting a robust drive to grab congressional control. "But, with all of that being said, we want to go through the process".

They have also accepted the committee's decision not to subpoena Mark Judge, a Kavanaugh friend who Ford asserts was present when the incident occurred in the eighties.

Vice President Mike Pence calls Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh "a man of integrity with impeccable credentials". Trump asked, as he defended his Supreme Court nominee.

Grassley's stance reflected a desire by President Donald Trump and GOP leaders to usher the 53-year-old Kavanaugh onto the high court by the October 1 start of its new session and before the November elections, when Democrats are mounting a robust drive to grab congressional control.

In a Saturday evening email, an attorney representing Ford's former classmate, Leland Ingham Keyser, stated that his client "does not know Mr. Kavanaugh and she has no recollection of ever being at a party or gathering where he was present, with, or without Dr. Ford". As of Sunday afternoon, Ford's attorneys have announced that a deal has been reached for her to testify on Thursday. "I have Republican senators who have reached out to Democratic senators and assured them that they are looking to this as kind of a determination to how their final vote will be cast".

Ford's legal team has said she strongly prefers that her allegations are fully investigated before she testifies. President Trump attacked Ford, asserting she would have gone to the police as a 15-year-old if the attempted rape was "that bad".

The question now is whether anyone at the White House, Kavanaugh or at the Senate Judiciary Committee was involved in the harebrained scheme to accuse a classmate of Kavanaugh's under the bonkers theory Ford got the identity of her attacker "confused".

Trump has not tweeted criticism of Ford since Friday. It's only after her testimony that a vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation can take place in the Senate.

Ford, who asked that the FBI investigate the allegations, said there was alcohol at the party and that Kavanaugh and Judge were very drunk at the time.

Kavanaugh has strongly denied the accusation as a "completely false allegation".

Ford has received death threats while Kavanaugh and his wife also have received threats.

The New Yorker notes that even the Trump White House "appears to have given up any hope of silencing Ford or dismissing her claims entirely".
