Seal slaps kayaker with octopus in New Zealand

The video was first posted by Mulinder's friend Taiyo Masuda - both men are content creators for the GoPro brand, and were specifically on a kayaking tour to test out the company's latest cameras. Mulinder just happened to be in the direct path of a particularly messy eater.

"My Uber driver who just brought us here just goes "you're the guy, you're the octopus guy", Mulinder told Network 10. We can only imagine that's what a seal was thinking when he slapped a kayaker in the face with an octopus over the weekend.

The octopus hung around a little, gripping to the bottom of Mulinder's kayak to stay out of reach of the seal who disappeared fairly quickly after the slap.

Mulinder appears to be fine now, and so is the octopus, which apparently stayed stuck to his kayak and out of the grasp of the seal following the fight.

"Obviously on objective", one Twitter user says. "Something so awesome would only happen to you".

The kayaker, Kyle Mulinder, said "My face happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time", but I'm happy with how things played out.

Since posting the video to his Facebook page overnight, it has been viewed more than 92,000 times.

It has also provided for plenty of punny jokes.

Kyle Mulinder accidentally in the middle of a nature smackdown.

A slow-mo replay of the incident shows the seal break through the waves before discarding its ocean snack in a single flip - perfectly clocking Mr Masuda's mate in the mug.
