Maine U.S. Sen. Susan Collins called Trump's lampooning of Ford "wholly inappropriate and in my view unacceptable". "I don't know", Trump said on stage in Southhaven, Mississippi, mimicking and misrepresenting Ford's testimony.

Asked if Trump was anxious that his comments would jeopardise votes from swing Republican senators, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: "I don't think so".

What is the other reaction?

Trump said, echoing one point Blasey Ford did recall.

He reiterated his earlier claims Tuesday that nowadays you are "guilty until proven innocent", and stepped up his line of argument that men are under attack in America, without mentioning survivors of sexual assault.

What does Prof Ford remember?

One major gap, they said, was Judge Kavanaugh's chief accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, who as of the afternoon had yet to speak to agents.

"We're standing together against Judge Kavanaugh", Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand told demonstrators. Last week, she testified that Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed, tried to take off her clothes and covered her mouth in the early 1980s, when the two were teenagers.

Prof Ford did acknowledge in her testimony that she could not provide all the details asked of her - including how she arrived at the party or how she left it and where exactly it took place. "That's the only thing I remember", Mr Trump mocked. Leahy's office didn't immediately return a message seeking comment on Tuesday.

"I had one beer, right?"

"Wow, such enthusiasm and energy for Judge Brett Kavanaugh".

Is the Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry about to end?

"There will be plenty of time for members to review and be briefed on the supplemental material" before Friday's vote, McConnell said to the almost empty chamber.

"Instead of trying to sort out with reason and care the allegations that were raised, Judge Kavanaugh responded in an intemperate, inflammatory, and partial manner, as he interrupted and, at times, was discourteous to questioners", the letter goes on. Under Senate procedure, an intervening day will occur on Thursday before a vote to end debate on Friday, setting up a potential confirmation vote for Saturday.
