Trump apologises to Kavanaugh for 'pain and suffering'

Brett Kavanaugh will hear his first arguments as a Supreme Court justice Tuesday morning in Washington, his first day on the new job after a contentious nomination process.

It's Trump's particular choice of wording that has the internet up in arms.

In reality, Kavanaugh´s confirmation lit a match under existing tensions ahead of the midterm elections.

Kimmel had some choice words about Trump's performance during Monday's televised ceremony, especially when the president proclaimed that Kavanaugh had been "proven innocent" of Dr. Ford's assault allegation.

On social media, people took issue with the use of the words "proven innocent".

Brett M Kavanaugh was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States after a bitterly divided Senate confirmed him Saturday.

At times he cried, at other times he shouted, leading many to wonder whether - regardless of whether Dr Ford's claim was true - he lacked the temperament for a lifetime appointment in the US's most powerful court.

Republicans had hoped to confirm Kavanaugh in time for the court's October 1 start of the new term. The court's two oldest justices are Democratic appointees: Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 85 and Stephen Breyer is 80. Instead, the former D.C. Circuit judge missed the first week of arguments as the Senate considered an allegation that he had sexually assaulted a woman in high school.

Mr Kavanaugh officially became a member of the high court Saturday.

Kavanaugh is Trump's second appointee to the Supreme Court.

"Although the Senate confirmation process tested me, as it has tested others, it did not change me". "If Justice Roberts sits on the complaints, then they will reside in a kind of purgatory and will never be adjudicated", said New York University law professor Stephen Gillers.

"The answer to your question", McConnell said, "is we will see if there's a vacancy in 2020". "That is now over", Kavanaugh said.

Before Kavanaugh's taking of the oath, U.S. President Donald Trump slammed the judge's opponents for a "campaign of personal destruction".

Kavanaugh is the second justice Trump has successfully nominated to the Supreme Court, following the confirmation a year ago of Neil Gorsuch to the seat left by the late Antonin Scalia.

"I take this office with gratitude and no bitterness". Police barricades are up in front of the court, but the few protesters on hand are congregating near the garage where the justices enter.

"I was not appointed to serve one party or one interest, but to serve one nation". The new justice's four clerks all are women, the first time that has happened. They included a case about a potential habitat for an endangered frog and another about an Alabama death row inmate whose lawyers argue he shouldn't be executed because dementia has left him unable to remember his crime. So I think even before you start focusing on questions about his truthfulness before a Senate committee, you've got to focus on the urgency of the work over the next 30 days, and that's where my focus is.
