Every business leader and news organization of conscience should pull out from the Public Investment Fund-powered conference and suspend any involvement with Saudi-funded projects like Neom - at the very least, until the disappearance and potential murder of Mr. Khashoggi have been suitably investigated, but perhaps beyond that, given the regime's broader human rights record.

Late in the day, there were published reports that the Saudis were preparing to concede that Khashoggi, a USA -based Saudi contributor to The Washington Post, had been killed in an interrogation gone wrong.

"There needs to be a credible investigation to establish the truth about what happened, and - if relevant - to identify those bearing responsibility for the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, and ensure that they are held to account", the countries said in a joint statement.

Sheikh Abdullah reiterated the UAE's unequivocal stance with Saudi Arabia in whatever policies it sets and tremendous efforts it exerts to counter the various risks and threats besetting the global community, particularly extremism and terrorism.

"As necessity now arises to clarify the facts associated with this crisis in a neutral and honest manner, we reaffirm our categorical rejection of the repercussions of the politicised anti-Saudi campaign".

Saudi financial markets have come under pressure in the last few days as U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to punish Riyadh if it turns out that Khashoggi was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul as alleged by the Turkish authorities.

Still, he was careful to hedge his language - as he has been largely since Khashoggi vanished after the journalist's visit to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. "That lets us both go faster", Segars said.

Saudi Arabia is suspected to be responsible for the disappearance of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a case which has global impact. The Saudi government could not be reached immediately for comment on the CNN report.

Prodded Saturday to specify what type of "severe punishment" he could impose, Trump demurred. That would be an unprecedented breach in a decades-old, deep economic and security relationship that is key to Washington's policies in the Middle East.

On Sunday, JP Morgan Chase & Co said Chief Executive Jamie Dimon has canceled plans to attend the Saudi Arabian investor conference later this month. The New York Times reported that the Saudi royal court would soon put out a narrative that an official within the kingdom's intelligence services - who happened to be a friend of Prince Mohammed - had carried out the killing.

Trump said he'd made clear the stakes.

Prince Khaled al-Faisal, a senior member of Saudi Arabia's ruling family and senior advisor to King Salman, has met Erdogan to discuss Khashoggi's disappearance, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters without providing details.
