Amritsar train accident: Railway officials rush to train accident site

Hundreds of people were observing the burning of an effigy of the demon Ravana during the Hindu festival of Dussehra when the train struck, he said.

Pratap Singh Bajwa says the victims were watching fireworks during a religious festival on Friday. However, two trains arrived from the opposite direction at the same time giving little opportunity to people to escape, they said.

Witnesses said the dead included children. Thirty bodies had been removed from the site by Friday evening as relief work was being hampered by nightfall. He also alleged that Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife fled from the scene instead of helping people.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, reacting to the incident tweeted, "Rushing to Amritsar to personally supervise relief & rescue in tragic rail accident on Dussehra in Amritsar". Since the crackers were burning with large sound, people couldn't hear the train sound. There were reportedly around 700 people at the accident spot. "Exact figure is not known but it is definitely more than 50-60", Amritsar Police Commissioner SS Srivastava told ANI. "We are still evacuating people". "My government will give Rs 5 lakh to kin of each deceased and free treatment to injured in government and private hospitals", he said on Twitter.

ADCP Lakhbir Singh said 15 bodies have been found. She was escorted away immediately after the accident. Understand Indian Railways and local authorities are taking steps to help affected people.

"The tragedy is heart-wrenching", he tweeted.

Following the train mishap, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed officials to take all possible measures to provide immediate assistance. The Chief Minister will visit the site of the incident on Saturday.
