Amazon May Split HQ2 Location Between 2 Cities

The Journal says a decision and announcement could come as soon as this week.

The e-commerce giant previous year announced plans to invest US$5 billion in a second headquarters and hire up to 50,000 people, setting off a frenzy of interest from cities in the USA and Canada.

Northern Virginia was always a favored contender to receive HQ2 owing to its proximity to Washington D.C.

Amazon's shortlist of potential second headquarter sites appeared to get smaller over the weekend. Just yesterday, the Journal reported that Dallas was also still in the mix along with Crystal City and the Big Apple as Amazon's late-stage negotiations progressed with a handful of final cities.

The Post reports that Amazon is in advanced talks about building options at the Arlington County location.

This report was seemingly corroborated in a tweet from Mike Grella, Amazon's Director of Economic Development, admonishing the source who leaked the Crystal City negotiations to WaPo.

A clause in the deal requires the developer, KDC, to pay A.H. Belo Corp, owner of the Morning News, 50 percent of the profit if Amazon buys the site before the sale closes on December 28. Dallas and Austin are among the 20 finalists that Amazon identified in January for its $5 billion investment to house as many as 50,000 employees over the next decade.

"For a decision like that, as far as I know, the best way to make it is you collect as much data as you can, you immerse yourself in that data, but then make the decision with your heart", Bezos said. And transit issues are also a factor, the report said.

Crystal City is served by a mass transit system and major highways, both qualifications that Amazon has said is required for its new headquarters as well.
