The Los Angeles Times quoted a law enforcement official as saying at least 30 shots had been fired and that there were casualties. A "College Country Nights" event was being held on Wednesday evening, according to the bar's website.

Nick Steinwender, who is part of the university's student government, said his friends were inside the bar when the shooting started.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area and that roads are being blocked. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

The Ventura County Fire Department confirmed just after midnight that there had been reports of "multiple injuries" at the bar.

Authorities say multiple people - at least 11 - were injured in the shooting, including one officer, though the extent of the injuries wasn't immediately known.

Police say the threat is still active and the shooter is still at large after opening fire at the Borderline Bar and Grill.

Firefighters and first responders have arrived on scene and the Ventura County Sheriff's Office is working to secure the scene.

"The gunman used an automatic weapon and also threw in some sort of smoke bombs in to the crowd in the club", he said.

Dozens of police cars and emergency service vehicles were spotted at the scene in Thousand Oaks around 11.20pm local time on Wednesday.

Several injured in shooting at a bar in southern California in USA, police said.

Thousand Oaks is in Ventura County, about 40 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
