Carragher warns Chelsea: Kante and Jorginho can't work together

He also insisted that N'Golo Kante will continue to play in a more attacking midfield role and criticised the Frenchman's performance at Wembley.

Sarri has encouraged Kante to get forward in matches and his latest comments may appear to be a contradiction.

Hazard has not scored in his last nine matches for club and country after a prolific start to the season, and Sarri said that he is concerned by the winger's loss of rhythm heading into a crucial stretch of the season. "If you go to the pitch with that approach and the opponents are very strong, like Tottenham, and determined like Tottenham were, the problem is bigger". But we have to understand why we played against Tottenham without determination. "I want to see we learned our lessons [against Tottenham]".

The manager admitted that he demanded answers from his players individually after the defeat. It's very hard for me to understand why we played without determination in such an important match.

Hazard was likely to be rested anyway on Thursday, but given his recent recovery from a back problem, the Blues will not risk him.

"I just see a normal midfield player".

"I have a meeting of five or 10 minutes with the individuals, individual meetings with the players", he added. We have to understand why, especially from the mental point of view.

"We thought that if we could stop that - and we wanted to win the ball up high - so I wanted to be as close to him as possible to make sure that we did win the ball up high, break early and create the chances we did". We played without determination in such an important match.

"The targets are very clear in my mind: in the short period, to win something".

Instead, Carragher feels the incoherence that occasionally hurts the Blues' midfield stems from Sarri instructing Kante to play in a less effective position.

"I think, as you know, I want to play a centre midfielder with a very technical player, so for me the centre midfielder is Jorginho or [Cesc] Fabregas", he told a news conference.

"Why Maurizio Sarri is not playing N'Golo Kante in front of his back four baffles me".

"He lost the position, he attacked too much the other box".

Former Newcastle striker Shearer was critical of Sarri for starting Jorginho ahead of Kante in a holding role.
