George Bush Sr, the 41st American president and father to the 43rd, has died.

In his retirement years, Bush watched as one of his sons, George W. Bush, twice won the presidency, only the second time in US history that a father and son both became the USA leaders.

It continues: "With sound judgement, common sense, and unflappable leadership, President Bush guided our Nation, and the world, to a peaceful and victorious conclusion of the Cold War".

George P. Bush, the former president's grandson, tweeted in memoriam on early Saturday morning.

He was the last World War 2 veteran to serve as president. "I couldn't even breathe when he was in the room", Barbara Bush said about him, adding, "I married the first man I ever kissed".

Bush served as Vice President to Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, and in 1988 won the Republican nomination for president.

The 41st president suffered from vascular parkinsonism, a rare condition that "mimics Parkinson's disease", according to the Associated Press.

His son, former president George W. Bush, released a statement announcing his dad's death.

The campaign was over within weeks - one of the most tactically successful military operations in U.S. history.

In February 2011, then President Barack Obama awarded Bush the highest United States civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom.

After retiring from public life, Bush fulfilled a wartime pledge to one day jump out of a plane for fun and famously went skydiving on his 75th, 80th, 85th and 90th birthdays.

Another son, Jeb - a former Florida governor - made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination in 2016.

Only one other US president, John Adams, had a son who also became president.
