Pugh, explaining that the World Series helps players' development by allowing them to make errors at a top-class level, added: "We learnt some strong lessons, such as how hard it is to defend for long periods of time when you're without the ball, and not to give the ball away cheaply, which we did against Spain".

Canada is second in the season standings with 34 points behind leading New Zealand's 40.

The All Blacks Sevens topped their pool after wins over Wales, Spain and US, setting up a quarter final against Scotland.

On Friday, New Zealand's Black Ferns beat Canada 26-14 in the women's final.

New Zealand won all three of their games on the opening day of the second stage of the HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series to stay on track for their fifth successive title from the competition.

After falling behind 7-0 after a try from Hannah Tyrrell, the Kiwis answered through Blyde and Broughton to take a 10-7 halftime lead. A try-saving tackle from Mike Ellery prevented the Blitzboks answering back before Mitchell's second and a Tom Bowen try increased England's lead to 17-0 at half-time.

The Black Ferns Sevens will face Russian Federation in the first quarter-final of the Dubai Rugby Sevens at 6pm (NZT) after winning all their pool play matches on day one of the tournament. Sam Pecqueur scored a try with seconds left for Scotland to trail by only 21-19, then Jamie Farndale appeared to touch down the victor, but it was disallowed because he stepped out of bounds.

Ombachi then responded for Kenya by scoring a brace before Olindi completed the comeback with a try of his own.

The tournament was won by New Zealand, which beat the U.S.

Collier quickly tipped the ball onto Andrew Knewstubb who finished off the play, strolling in under the goal posts untouched to score New Zealand's third try of the match. Head coach Damian McGrath's Langford-based crew lost 26-12 to England and 31-19 to France before beating Japan 27-7.

Meanwhile, after a winless start to the Dubai Women's Sevens Series on Thursday, the national women's Sevens team continued with their poor run of form as they slumped to a fourth successive defeat.

The second stop on the World Rugby Sevens Series season is next weekend in Cape Town, South Africa. England will face South Africa, Fiji meets the United States, and New Zealand plays Scotland. A crucial turn over in the last play of the game by debutant Scott Gregory secured the 7-5 victory, and was also awarded the UL Mark of Excellence as "Moment of the Tournament".
