Police are looking to identify a couple after an engagement ring was recovered from a utility grate in Times Square.

The NYPD released photos and surveillance video showing a man and a woman searching for a ring which fell into a utility grate near 2 Times Square in Manhattan on Friday.

They left without leaving their names or contact information.

His fiancée (although we don't know if she actually said yes) puts her hands to her face when she realises what has happened.

The couple asked police for help, but emergency service officers could not immediately find the ring.

The good news is that officers from the New York Police Department clearly have a romantic side and, more importantly, access to the grate, so could get it out quite easily.

Comments by netizens have been largely positive, with many saying this is what they love about NY, and others praising the city's police force.

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill used his own Twitter feed in hopes of locating the couple.
