A grandson of George H.W. Bush said Tuesday that the late 41st president wanted his state funeral to be an opportunity for the nation to put aside political differences.

Mrs. Bush also visited with friends who take care of the White House residence, where she and President George W. Bush lived during his two terms in office from 2001 to 2009.

Democratic Representative Nancy Pelosi, the incoming House speaker, and Senate Democratic leader Charles (Chuck) Ellis Schumer placed wreaths at the ceremony.

Trump also did not attend the funeral in August of another Republican giant, former senator John McCain.

Friends and family will celebrate his life during a memorial service at the National Cathedral in Washington. "For now, Martha and I send our sincerest condolences to the Bush family and pray that President George H.W. Bush may rest in peace", said Carper.

The Kansas Republican, 95, who like Bush was a decorated veteran from his service in World War II, was the Republican presidential nominee in 1996 against President Clinton.

"He embodied the characteristics we admire in a president: integrity, civility, dignity, humility", Schumer said during his speech.

As official Washington paid its respects inside the Capitol, Americans queued up outside the Capitol Visitor Center for their chance. The service will take place tomorrow at The National Cathedral in Washington.

George W. Bush greeted Melania Trump with a kiss outside Blair House. He will be buried alongside Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years who died in April.

Another person told the Post that Bush "wouldn't want anyone there to feel uncomfortable, including the incumbent president'". Flags on public buildings are flying at half-staff for 30 days.

Bush served two terms as vice president under Republican President Ronald Reagan before his own stint in the Oval Office from 1989 to 1993, a time that saw the end of the Cold War as well as the USA routing of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's army in the 1991 Gulf War.
