Bush, who died at age 94 - almost eight months after his wife of 73 years died at their Houston home - was a congressman, an ambassador to the United Nations and envoy to China, chairman of the Republican National Committee, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, two-term vice president and, finally, president.

By then, Bush's son, George W. Bush, was in his second term in the White House, having taken the USA to war against Iraq for a second time in 2003, and eclipsing his father's record by winning re-election in 2004.

He is the 41st President of the United States and served the country from 1989 to 1993.

A brief but deep recession saw the popularity he gained from his diplomatic win evaporate, costing him a second term in office.

In a life on the world stage and at the highest levels of the American political scene, Bush lost and won elections before becoming the American leader in 1989, and then, with a declining USA economy and unemployment rising, was turned out of office after four years in the White House, losing his re-election bid in 1992.

The elder Mr Bush, the son of a senator, rose through the political ranks: from congressman to United Nations ambassador, Republican Party chairman to envoy to China, CIA director to two-term vice president under the hugely popular Ronald Reagan. Still, he lived to see son George W. twice elected to the presidency - only the second father and son chief executives, following John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

"President Bush guided our nation and the world to a peaceful and victorious conclusion of the Cold War", the Trumps wrote.

"The love affair between President Bush and the students of the Bush school is something that motivates us all to make sure the graduates of the Bush school are well launched to go out and make a difference in the world", Finch said.

Trump said he spoke with former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to express his sympathies. The president did not attend McCain's funeral, where Obama and George W Bush both delivered tributes.

After Barbara Bush died, George H.W. Bush insisted on going to greet everyday mourners in Houston who had come to pay their respects to the former first lady.

As the last USA president to have served in World War II and the country's last Cold War leader, the end of Mr Bush's time in the White House marked the end of a political era.

"He loves A&M", said Warren Finch, director of the George H.W. Bush Library and Museum.

In 1992, Bush lost his re-election bid to Clinton - whose aide coined the now famous slogan "It's the economy, stupid" - as eccentric third-party candidate Ross Perot syphoned off conservative votes.

The proclamation hails Bush as "one of America's greatest points of light", a reference to one of the former leader's signature phrases about the impact of American civic culture.

George H.W. Bush who was hospitalised shortly after the death of his wife, Barbara Bush has passed on at the age of 94.

Mr Bush had vascular parkinsonism, a form of Parkinson's disease, and used a wheelchair or motorised scooter for the last six years of his life.

He flew combat missions from the aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto and won the Distinguished Flying Cross.

"Vice President of the United States".
