Luka Modric wins Ballon d'Or, ending decade of Ronaldo and Messi triumphs

Luka Modric has won the 2018 Ballon d'Or ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezman, with Lionel Messi coming fifth.

Modrić this year has already the UEFA Champions League, 2018 World Cup Golden Ball, UEFA Player of the Year, FIFA "Best" Player of the Year and IFFHS Playmaker of the Year as well as runners-up medal at the World Cup.

After becoming the first Croatian to win the Ballon d'Or, Modric quickly pledged his future to three-time reigning Champions League holders Madrid amid links with Serie A side Inter. "My dream was to play for a big club and win important trophies", said Modric, above.

Five years ago, the Dinamo Zagreb youth product was voted as the worst signing of the season in La Liga after a slow start to life in the Spanish capital.

"When I recounted all of the individual trophies that I've won this year and when I saw that I was among the 30 finalists, I began to believe it, but there's one thing I'll never forget". Hegerberg is a three-time Women's Champions League victor with the French side and scored a tournament-record 15 times last season. "I want to end this speech with a message to all young girls in the world".

The worst kept secret in football was made official on Monday inside the Le Grand Palais in the French capital as, for the first time since 2007, a player not named Cristiano or Lionel has won the Ballon d'Or.

Varane played every minute of France's victorious World Cup campaign, even captaining the team in the draw with Denmark that ensured they topped the Group C, while he also later scored the crucial opening goal in the 2-0 quarter final win over Uruguay.

"There wasn't a specific moment where he told me: You can win it", he told France Football. Honoured by one and all, Hegerberg stood on the stage, ready to be greeted by former France worldwide David Ginola and French DJ Martin Solveig.

However, it left most stunned, including Mbappe, who was pictured speechless at the incident, at the appalling change in tone as the words were subjected to Hegerberg, a woman achiever. I didn't really think about it at the time to be honest.
