Duke Energy calls in trucks from Midwest to help face Carolina snowstorm

A winter storm warning is in effect for most of Virginia until to 2 p.m. Monday, said CNN meteorologist Gene Norman.

The winter storm moving through the Southeast is expected to have a heavy impact in the Piedmont of North Carolina and southern Virginia, but is expected to have little or no impact farther north, the weather service said.

Even before the storm hit, Cooper declared a statewide emergency.

If you're looking to track the path of this powerful winter storm, I've rounded up a few good resources below for real-time updates and infographics. Cooper said emergency crews, including the National Guard, worked overnight to clear traffic accidents on major roadways.

WRAL-TV also reported that a driver was killed outside of Charlotte when a tree fell on a vehicle.

Authorities responded to more than 500 vehicle crashes between midnight and 11 a.m. Sunday, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said.

Cooper told residents to stay at home and wrap holiday presents and watch football while the snow falls Sunday.

Some areas north of Charlotte saw as much as 17 inches of snow.

"Snow may be handsome but it can also be treacherous and I urge North Carolinians to take this storm seriously and get ready for it now", Gov. Roy Cooper said in a statement. Ray Cooper said Monday.

About 300,000 people in the United States southeast were without power today and hundreds of flights were cancelled after a storm dumped 20 inches of snow and left one motorist dead. Power outages also are affecting 81,000 in Virginia, 58,000 in SC and about 10,000 in Tennessee.

In North Carolina's Durham County, where a foot (.3 meters) fell in places Sunday, kids reveled in a day off from school as a second dusting of snow and sleet fell Monday morning.

At ILM, all Sunday afternoon and evening flights to and From Charlotte were canceled. Three Charlotte men were found dead Saturday in a York, S.C., house that had high levels of carbon monoxide and a generator inside, the coroner's office said.

Winter Storm Diego will spread a widespread mess of snow, sleet and freezing rain from the southern Plains to the Ozarks and the Southeast late this week into early next week. The woman, who declined to give her name, said she was surprised to see the snow sticking again Monday morning.

One weather-related death was reported in North Carolina as a result of the snowstorm.

North Arkansas will see up to 6 inches of snow and up to one-10th of an inch of ice.

The Greenville-Spartanburg area of SC is covered with ice, rendering road conditions especially unsafe. "Please stay off the roads", Greenville County Emergency Management urged Monday, according to reports.
