The 2018 Miss Universe pageant held a particular relevance for Spain: for the first time in the history of the competition, there was a transgender contestant, Ángela Ponce, a native of Seville.

Ponce, who is 26 years old, defeated almost two dozen other contestants in Spain to become Miss Universe Spain, and win the right to represent that country in the Miss Universe pageant.

The Miss Universe contest will air on Sunday night, with talk show personality Steve Harvey performing host duties.

Though she didn't make it to the top 20, the 27-year-old from Sevilla, Spain, was honored with a special segment during the live competition in Bangkok, Thailand.

"I don't need to win Miss Universe".

On Saturday, Pia Wurtzbach, who won the title in 2015, rallied her followers on social media to get behind Gray. "But I just wanted to let you guys know what I'm doing.going really fast".

"I would love to hear her personal experience on the battlefront of being a transgender woman", she said. Back home, her beauty queen squad has shown their support to Tamaryn, with many former Miss SA's taking to Instagram to share how proud they were of her.

"We represent something - that has to be what we're there for".

Only afterwards did she get more medical attention backstage.

Despite the injury, Ashley continued to co-host Miss Universe until the end when she got to congratulate this year's victor, Miss Philippines, Catriona Gray.
