Federal Employees Furloughed or Working Without Pay

And that was all before a Bloomberg News report late Friday that Trump was talking openly to advisers about firing Jerome Powell, the head of the nation's central bank - whose independence from the president is a bedrock feature of the USA financial system.

Trump claimed on Monday that federal workers are behind him in the shutdown fight, saying many "have said to me and communicated, 'stay out until you get the funding for the wall.'" He didn't say who he had heard from.

The president casting doubt on a girl's belief in Santa Claus caused quite the stir on social media Christmas Day, but everything was apparently relatively normal in the Lloyd household. "The whole thing is juvenile". It affects some 800,000 government workers.

Trump has made clear in public comments and tweets that he believes Powell is hurting the USA economy and contributing to stock market losses - two things that need to be strong to improve Trump's re-election chances. "But other than that, I wish everybody a very Merry Christmas", the President said as he fielded reporters' questions after talking with members of the armed forces.

As a result, Trump feels vindicated in his political instincts and is increasingly unmoved by advisers, they said.

Democrats have supported including an additional US$1.3 billion in border security funding, at one point agreeing to an additional US$1.6 billion during negotiations with congressional Republicans.

Trump, who was elected in 2016, campaigned on a promise to build a "big, attractive wall" made of concrete, rebar and steel across the length of the southern border.

Trump said it was unclear when Democrats would allow the government to reopen.

The partial government shutdown continues as President Trump demands Democrats increase funding for the border wall. "It's stressful for staff, it's stressful for inmates, and the government shutdown and not knowing if you're going to get a paycheck in a couple of weeks is an unneeded stress", he said. Many are on the job but must wait until after the shutdown to be paid again.

Fox News's Outnumbered is down on President Donald Trump's wall - predicting it's not going to happen and that the president is in for a "tough ride" if he thinks otherwise.

"I can't tell you when the government is going to be open", he said.

Most of the federal government, which directly employs nearly 4 million people, is unaffected.

Trump excused federal employees from work on Monday and Christmas is a federal holiday, meaning the public could begin feeling the shutdown's effects on Wednesday.

Trump promised to make Mexico pay for the border wall. While the caravan of thousands approached our borders, Democrats argued that it was no more than a spontaneous effort by oppressed women and children seeking a safe harbor.

"Most view this as an act of ineptitude", he said.

Mr Trump said he envisions a wall so tall "like a three-story building", that only an Olympic champion would be able to scale it.
