Sheriff: Suspected cop killer 'should have been reported to ICE'

SWAT deputies made a perimeter around the residence early Friday morning and Arriaga surrendered without incident, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Department. The suspect belonged to Sureños street gangs, he said.

Corporal Ronil Singh, 33, pulled over the suspect just before 1 am on Wednesday and a few moments later he called out "shot fired" over the radio.

Singh's brother, Reggie, thanked the officers and individuals who helped capture Arriaga. Singh exchanged gunfire with the suspect. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Singh was located near his own vehicle. The suspect had fled the scene.

Authorities are circulating several photos of the alleged gunman.

Christianson said that Arriaga had multiple Facebook accounts under different names, and was a self-professed gangster. He also noted that the suspect had been in the country for a number of years and was seeking to cross back into Mexico before the shooting occurred. Christianson said the case was being handed over to a prosecutor, and he suggested the killing could be a capital murder case. A gray, extended cab Dodge Ram pickup was seen in the area at the time of the shooting. It was found near a mobile home park on River Road on River Road. "... they intentionally lied to us, they tried to divert us off of the investigation".

Governor Jerry Brown has said the law strikes a balance between protecting families and ensuring consequences for serious criminals.

The suspect also had gang affiliations, Christianson said. Christianson added Arriaga has gang ties.

The sheriff commented on current border security laws, including criticism for sanctuary city laws.

The bill contains some exceptions, allowing local agencies to transfer individuals to federal immigration authorities if there is a judicial warrant or if the person has been previously convicted of a violent felony. He reportedly worked as a farm laborer. He thanked the Department of Homeland Security, ICE, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and U.S. Customs for assisting in the manhunt.

Richardson said he appreciated the many tips to investigators into Singh's shooting, but he lamented that people want to remain anonymous in these situations. He discharged his gun while trying to defend himself.

Authorities also arrested five other people for allegedly helping Perez Arriaga, including two who were in the country illegally. Christianson said at the news conference.

Virgen was arrested in Hanford and Quiroz was arrested in Modesto.

"Corporal Ronil Singh immigrated to this country LEGALLY and put his life on the line to protect the American people".

Ronil Singh's wife, Anamika, attended the vigil along with other relatives and friends.

Singh was originally from Fiji.

Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson stepped in to the answer that question.
