Play started nearly four hours late due to rain at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with the home team resuming on 236-6 after lunch in reply to India's thumping first innings 622-7 declared.

The hosts were rolled for 300 on a weather-affected day four, with Indian captain Virat Kohli enforcing the follow on.

"I feel this series win will give us a different identity as an Indian side", he said in post-match presentations. "For me, it's all about preparation and I was very well prepared".

"Firstly, I want to say I've never been more proud of being part of a team, than this one right here. This is where the transition began and to win four years later is special". "I'll be playing some first-class cricket back home, and I'll play some county cricket during the IPL", he said. "The boys make the captain look good", an elated skipper Virat Kohli said after the mission was accomplished.

India declared their first innings on 622 for seven.

"When we won the World Cup in 2011, I was the youngest member of the side. As a batsman, I was just getting used to the pace and bounce".

The 21-year-old, in his ninth Test, hit...

We now know the rankings are accurate.

They're the best there is.

"We are disappointed, definitely over the last two Tests. We have Tests against Sri Lanka and then the Ashes, so this series was important".

So far in Sydney, none of Australia's batsmen have managed to put together the marathon innings needed, with Khawaja, Shaun Marsh and Tim Paine all out in the first innings to poor shots.

"Tip our hats to India".

"In Melbourne and Sydney we were outplayed in all departments".

Such was the fragility of the Australian batting, a full day's play possibly could have been enough to win a record three Test matches in a single series in Australia had the heavens not opened up While Australian batting was severely handicapped due to the suspensions of their premier batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner but it can take nothing away from the heady achievement of Kohli's men, who have conquered an unchartered frontier with a lion-hearted display.

The two sides now play a five match one day series before India, who're the top ranked one day side in the world, head to New Zealand for a five match series against the Black Caps.

As mentioned, that's pretty much the story.

Paine became the spinner's third victim when a peach of a delivery clean bowled the Australia captain through his gaping gate for five. It's as simple as that.
