Winter Storm Warning issued for Lapeer County | The County

"Total snow accumulations of 2 to 3 inches will be common across East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and southwest North Carolina, but 4 to 6 inches is expected across the higher elevations of the Smoky Mountains". Some school districts have indicated they will cancel classes if wind chills dip below -20 or -25 degrees. Lake effect snow continues through Thursday.

Unsafe cold is forecast for Wednesday, too, with strong winds creating wind chills of -20 degrees to -35 degrees along with some snow. While the winds will relax going into Thursday, it will feel like its below zero.

Thomas says the morning looks relatively clear with some scattered snow flakes falling before noon.

Travel could be very hard at times with slick roads and significantly reduced visibility. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Temperatures and wind chills will become dangerously cold with frost bite occuring on exposed skin in 10 minutes and possibly as little as 5 minutes.

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible.


National reports about the latest storm have been touting blizzard-like conditions and bitterly cold wind chills for the middle part of the country and the Southern Tier is looking at the possibility of a half foot or more of snow in the middle of the week.

Winds could gust as high as 45 miles per hour later Wednesday through Thursday, which may produce near blizzard conditions with severe blowing and drifting snow, the Weather Service said.

For the Tuesday morning commute, a few rain/snow showers will be possible.
