More recently, reporters caught glimpses of Maroon 5's Super Bowl rehearsals a few days ago and saw an image of SpongeBob from the "Band Geeks" episode on a giant screen.

Perhaps spurred by Scott's donation, Maroon 5 also announced this week that they would make a $500,000 donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America in partnership with Interscope Records and the NFL.

What will be Maroon 5's first song?

Levine and co. then took to the stage to perform "Girls Like You" without Cardi B, as she declined the offer to stand in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and his boycott of the NFL.

The group then launched into "This Love", with Levine removing his black trench coat, with Levine playing an extended guitar solo.

The halftime show lineup was extensive: Maroon 5, Travis Scott, Big Boi, a potential guest appearance by SpongeBob Squarepants and any special guests as yet unannounced. Apparently, the cartoon's brief feature, which served to introduce Travis Scott to the stage, was in fact a tribute to the show's creator, Stephen Hillenburg, who died in November.

Gladys Knight, who also faced criticism for agreeing to participate in the festivities, sang the American national anthem prior to kickoff at Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium Sunday. Nor did Adam Levine adhere to the advice of Roger Waters and take a knee. "This is the show that's going to have the biggest hip hop presence that there's ever been".

But the crowd seemed to get riled up the most for Big Boi, who rolled into the show in a classic vehicle.

When he performed "The Way You Move", it just made you wonder what Andre 3000 was doing at the moment. Squidward recruits SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs and the rest of the crew from Bikini Bottom to perform at the halftime show of the Bubble Bowl. Many fans will, of course, be watching to see if the New England Patriots or Los Angeles Rams win the NFL Championship. Live Super Bowl coverage on CBS will begin at 2:00 p.m. ET.
